Gluten Free Weekly update

The gluten free weekly update is part of GlutenFreeIsrael.com Each week I will add a restaurant or a recipe that my family or a friend has used or been to.

I am also happy to take recommendations.

Any recommendation will be tested by my family before I post it on the site.

Weekly Update for the week of March 3, 2026:
Chag Purim Sameach — or perhaps a Freilichen Purim! 🎭

Kneidlach on Purim?

No, I didn’t start drinking early and confuse Purim with Pesach 😊  and it’s not just sleep deprivation from the Iranians turning my phone into a full-blown electronic grogger last night.

Last year during Pesach shopping, my wife stocked up on gluten free products — as many Pesach items happen to be gluten free year-round.

About a month ago we tried the Carmel (כרמל רקיקים) Kneidel Mix.

True to the box, the matzah balls came out light and fluffy.
For my personal taste? A little too fluffy.

So I asked my good friend (yes… ChatGPT 😉) how to firm them up.

Last Shabbat we tried again and added 2 tablespoons of potato starch.

gluten free kneidel mix

personally think a third tablespoon would have pushed them closer to “softball status” — but my daughter felt even 1 tablespoon would have been enough.

Final verdict?
✔️ The product is solid.
✔️ No need to have family ship mixes from the States.
✔️ If your household is divided on fluffiness — make two batches. One firmer, one fluffier. Everyone wins.

As we celebrate Purim and retell the story of Haman, we’re also mindful this year of our soldiers who are living through their own chapter of that story. We pray for their safety, for the safety of all of Am Yisrael, and for quieter days ahead.

Wishing everyone a joyful Purim filled with simcha and good food.

This Week’s Gluten Free Recipe Pizza

gluten free pizza

Weekly Update for the week of February 8,  2026:
This Week’s Gluten Free Israel Kitchen Hack: No-Fuss Chicken Soup

Last week felt like classic Israel winter. Cold days, a couple of rainy ones (thank G-d), and like half the country, my daughter came down with a cold.

Her request was: chicken soup. You know… Jewish penicillin.

That’s when my wife pulled out a genuinely brilliant kitchen hack.

I asked if we had cheesecloth to cook the chicken in to catch all the “stuff” (yes, that’s the technical term 😄) . Instead, she said: “Why not try a metal colander — if it fits in the pot?”

 Holy cow. It fit perfectly.

Here’s what we did (this isn’t about the recipe everyone has their own):

Veggies on the bottom of the pot

metal colander

Chicken broth (from the box) + water

Place a metal colander inside the pot

Add chicken legs, thighs, and a few bay leaves into the colander

As the soup cooked, all the “stuff” stayed neatly contained in the colander.

When it was ready:

Lift out the colander

Remove the chicken

Toss the bay leaves

Rinse the colander

Into the dishwasher it goes.

And just like that clear, comforting chicken soup with zero mess.

Simple, smart, and of course Gluten free.

Exactly the kind of hack that makes a long week feel a little easier.

If you try it, let us know — and if you’ve got your own gluten-free kitchen hacks, we’d love to share them in a future update.

Weekly Update for the week of February 1,  2026:
It started with sprinkles… and ended with chocolate, Rice Krispie Treats,
and a family debate.

A few weeks ago, we made one of our favorite gluten-free treats: classic Crispy Rice Treats. Then my wife had a fun idea — let’s add sprinkles.

The verdict? Mixed.
Some of us really liked them. I’ll admit (and this may surprise you) I thought they were a bit too sweet. That said, if you’re looking for a great birthday-party treat, kids would absolutely love them.

As we munched away, I threw out another idea:
What if next time we made Crispy Rice Treats with some kind of chocolate cereal?

Fast forward to last week, and my wife spotted Cocoa Pebbles in the store. You’ve got to love the shops in Efrat and Beit Shemesh (and I’m sure other parts of the country too) that cater to Anglos and stock familiar gluten-free favorites.

Using the same Dandies recipe, we tried again — this time with a mix of Cocoa Pebbles and Bowl & Basket Crispy Rice. A big thank-you to all three companies for exporting their products to Israel.

Chocolate Crispy Rice Treats

Our ratio:
2½ cups chocolate cereal + 2 cups regular crispy rice

The verdict? Yum.
They were best right after cooling. Personally, I felt the Cocoa Pebbles got a little soggy overnight, but no one else seemed to mind. And clearly it wasn’t a dealbreaker — they were gone within a couple of days.

While enjoying the treats, we started talking about other ways to level up a great snack. I’m not 100% sure who said it (I think my son), but someone suggested:
What if instead of Cocoa Pebbles, we added chocolate chips?

So stay tuned for our next Crispy Rice Treats adventure 🍫

Here are links to the original Dandies recipe I used, as well as the version on under recipes on this site.

Until next time — happy eating!

Weekly Update for the week of January  25, 2026:
Sushi Rehavia: A Gluten-Friendly Sushi Option in Jerusalem

My daughter’s favorite food is sushi. Last week she had an especially tough week at school, with multiple tests she studied hard for. Her request as a reward for all that effort was simple: go out for sushi.

My wife had recently been to Sushi Rehavia with friends visiting from the U.S. and suggested we try it as a family.

According to their website, Sushi Rehavia has three locations in Jerusalem. We visited the branch at Rachel Imenu 2, Jerusalem.

Sushi Rehavia
Home Fries

The food was very good. Menus are presented on tablets (with multi-language support), while orders are placed with the waitstaff. The menu clearly marks gluten-free options, which made choosing much easier. One standout appetizer was the home fries super tasty and highly recommended.

My wife and daughter both loved the sushi. I ordered from a different section of the menu and was also very happy with my choice.

What really impressed us was dessert. They offer gluten-free options, including mochi in several flavors and crème brûlée. We shared a few mochis, which were a great way to end the meal.

If you’re looking for a restaurant with a solid selection of gluten-free options and you enjoy sushi or Asian-fusion food, Sushi Rehavia is definitely worth checking out.

Weekly Update for the week of January  18, 2026:
Gluten Free Cholent for Shabbat…. No Barley Required

When it’s cold outside, nothing beats walking home from shul knowing a pot of cholent, or as it is called in Israel, חמין (Hamin), has been slowly cooking all night. The house smells different. The pace slows down. You lift the lid, and suddenly it feels like Shabbat lunch.

For anyone who may not be familiar, cholent is a traditional Jewish Shabbat stew, hearty, slow-cooked, and deeply comforting. Beans, potatoes, grains, meat, and spices come together over many hours, creating something that’s more than the sum of its parts.

I’m intentionally not giving a strict recipe here, because everyone has their own family version. Some people use crockpots. Others put it in the oven on very low heat. I’ve even heard of people leaving it on a plate overnight — though I’ll admit, I’ve never tried that myself.

That said, here’s how my gluten-free cholent usually comes together.

gluten free cholent

I start with 2–3 sliced onions, depending on their size and the amount of meat I’m using. I add 8–10 heaping teaspoons of onion soup mix, 6–8 potatoes, and about 2 cups of beans, plus a little bit of salt — you can always add more later to suit your personal taste.

Instead of barley, I use 2 cups of brown rice and 1 cup of buckwheat (kusmet). I finish it off with a healthy squeeze of ketchup, plenty of water, and then let time do the work.

One of the great things about brown rice is that it keeps expanding as it cooks. It absorbs flavor, adds body, and helps give the cholent that filling, comforting feel without needing barley.

The result is a cholent that’s rich, warming, and exactly what you want on a cold Shabbat afternoon. Same idea. Same comfort. Just a small adjustment that makes it work better for us.

Cholent is about tradition, warmth, and a pot that warms one’s soul and tummy on a cold winter day.

BTW — leftovers are great too!
That’s how we ended up with today’s picture. 😊

Gluten Free Blonde Brownies

Gluten Free blonde brownies

Gluten Free Blonde Brownies

One of my favorite desserts that my mother-in-law makes is her blond brownies. The original recipe comes from the Amit Women Galila Chapter cookbook, Plain and Fancy.
A few weeks ago, my daughter suggested we try making them gluten-free. The result was a huge hit—though we did learn one important lesson: even chocolate has its limits. We ended up adjusting the amount of chocolate chips, because believe it or not, there can be too much chocolate in a recipe.
Below you will find the original recipe adjusted to be gluten free and doubled.
Prep Time 25 minutes
Cook Time 45 minutes
Servings 12 servings

Equipment

  • 1 set of measuring spoons
  • 1 measuring cup
  • 2 mixing bowls
  • 2 glass cups for breaking and checking eggs
  • 1 large fork or Foley fork
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 9" x 13" baking pan

  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2/3 cup recipe called for butter or shortening we used coconut oil
  • 2 cups brown sugar (firmly packed) we tried maple sugar a little healthier and just as good
  • ½ cup chocolate chips about half a cup so it covers the top but not too much

Instructions

  • Sift flour
  • Add baking powder, baking soda and salt
  • Sift dry mixture
  • Melt coconut oil
  • Cream sugar and shortening which means -- beat softened shortening and sugar together until the mixture is light, fluffy
  • Add eggs and vanilla to the sugar and coconut oil
  • In a larger separate mixing bowl slowly add dry mixture to the mixed liquids
  • Grease 9" x 13" pan
  • Preheat oven to 350℉ / 177 C
  • Spread the brownie mix into the grease pan
  • Generously but not too generously sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the batter

Weekly Update for the week of January  4, 2026:
This one earned two thumbs up

Cafe Romi

A few weeks ago, I shared how much I enjoyed a cake from Ble Kemech. When I reached out to ask where else their products are sold, they pointed me to Cafe Romi in Modiin.

Modiin isn’t exactly next door for us, but it’s far closer than Tel Aviv—so off we went.

Cafe Romi offers a mix of gluten-free and regular items, all clearly marked (though it’s always smart to double-check). The owner, Gali, was incredibly helpful. Right at the entrance, there’s an impressive display of gluten-free breads, including gluten-free pita.

My nephew, who has celiac disease, gave enthusiastic approval—two thumbs up—for the gluten-free hamotzi challah rolls, pita bread, and the cakes we bought for Shabbat.

Some items are baked on-site, and we arrived just as fresh gluten-free cookies and bourekas came out of the oven. Other products are brought in from additional locations, and there’s also a nice selection of packaged gluten-free items available for purchase.

If you’re anywhere near Modiin, Cafe Romi is absolutely worth a stop. There’s plenty of free parking, a welcoming and knowledgeable staff, and even a Cafe Romi WhatsApp group ( QR code included).

One more bonus: I asked, and yes—they’re planning to have gluten-free hamantaschen for Purim.

Weekly Update for the week of December 28, 2025:
Gluten Free Treats, Dinner, and a Movie

A couple of weeks ago, there were two events at Cinema City in Jerusalem. The first was the HER Jerusalem Chanukah Love Yourself Festival, and the second was a private showing of Zootopia for olim, sponsored by our Yehsuv.

Since it was Chanukah, of course we had to check out both events.

The highlight for me at the festival was unexpectedly finding gluten-free treats — at of all places, the Postpartum Doula booth. Obviously, I’m not having kids, but when I see food made by a small vendor, I love supporting a small business. As a bonus, everything she was selling was gluten-free.

I sampled an oat square, and my daughter tried a muffin. The muffin was good, but the oat squares were hands-down our favorite.

Before heading into the movie, we needed to grab dinner,  because one cannot live on popcorn and ice cream alone. We stopped at Greg Café in Cinema City.

The first thing I have to say is this: the service was excellent. Beyond just having gluten friendly options, the waitstaff and especially our waitress were outstanding. She answered all of our dietary questions clearly and responsibly and made sure we understood that the kitchen does have cross-contamination. That transparency matters, and I appreciated it enough to leave a Google review.

There were plenty of gluten-friendly options on the menu. Obviously, if you have celiac disease, you need to do your own due diligence. Greg does offer gluten free bread as an option, and several dishes can be ordered without bread or modified.

Gluten Friendly Options at Greg Café (Based on Menu Review & Reports)

  • Breakfast plates with eggs, salads, and spreads (ordered without bread)
  • Salads (request no croutons or bread additions)
  • Gluten-free bread available at select locations, including Cinema City

Greg’s website says they have over 100 locations, including:

Jerusalem Area

  • Cinema City Jerusalem
  • Mamilla
  • Talpiot
  • King David area

Central Israel

  • Tel Aviv (multiple locations)
  • Rishon LeZion
  • Givat Shmuel
  • Hod Hasharon
  • Netanya

Beit Shemesh & Surroundings

  • Big Fashion Beit Shemesh
  • Gush Etzion

North & South

  • Haifa
  • Kiryat Ata
  • Yokne’am
  • Rosh Pina
  • Ein Bok

Would I go to Greg at Cinema City just for dinner? Probably not. When I’m in Jerusalem, I usually try to seek out and support independent local businesses. But if I was already nearby, heading to a movie, or at one of Greg’s other locations, and needed a place with solid service, clear communication around dietary needs, and options for the whole family, I would absolutely stop there again.

Weekly Update for the week of  December 21, 2025: Gluten-Free Finds by the Sea

Why Hadera Belongs on Your Israel Food Map

A few months ago, my wife and I took a short trip up to Hadera while our daughter was away on her annual Tiyul Shnaty (school trip). We enjoyed the beach and relaxed atmosphere so much that we decided to return this time with the whole family for a Chanukah vacation.

If you’re gluten free and wondering whether a beach getaway in Israel is realistic, the answer is a confident yes.

🏨 Where We Stayed
If you’re looking for a beachfront hotel with gluten free options, I recommend the Jacob Resort Hadera The staff is very transparent that the kitchen is not sterile, but they were knowledgeable, accommodating, and made the experience comfortable overall.

They offer an extensive breakfast buffet that includes gluten free bread, gluten free cake, and a wide variety of naturally gluten free options, making it easy to start the day without stress. On some days, they also serve a cheesecake-style dish closer to a blintz which contains no gluten ingredients, though it is not certified gluten free, so each guest should decide based on their own comfort level.

Eating Out (Without Feeling Limited)
On our trips up north, we tried several local restaurants. One standout was a Portuguese הפורטוגזי ביתן אהרון restaurant that, while it did not offer gluten free bread, had plenty of gluten friendly menu options, including desserts. It’s a great example of a place where you can enjoy a full meal without feeling restricted.

🛒 A Surprise Gluten Free Find
One of the biggest surprises of the trip was discovering a small gluten free shop in Hadera. The shop was called Happy Gluty – הפי גלוטי We picked up a variety of products, including gluten free Cheerios, which are not always easy to find. Take a look at what my kids picked out (not including the frozen cake).

A few important notes:
The shop is not under kashrut supervision.

The staff is very clear about which items are baked locally in a non-certified bakery.
Many if not most of the packaged products are kosher certified, and labels are easy to check if that matters to you.

🥧 The Best Bite of the Trip
The highlight for me was getting to sample a gluten-free lemon meringue pie from בליקמח Ble Kemech — a Tel Aviv bakery I probably would never have discovered otherwise.
It was excellent.

If you’re anywhere near Hadera (just north of Netanya) and looking for gluten free options, you definitely won’t go hungry. And if you’re in Tel Aviv, I highly recommend seeking out בליקמח . If their other baked goods are anything like that lemon meringue pie, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

To see the restaurants we visited in Hadera, click here

Happy Eating!

The Gluten Free Crumb That Changed My Schnitzel Game

Turkey Schnitzel

Glute Free Turkey Schnitzel

A couple of months ago in my newsletter, I featured a brand called Eshbal–Barili. At the time, I had only sampled their granola bites.
Last week, I tried something new: Turkey schnitzel made with Eshbal–Barili Gluten-Free Baked Crumbs.
I’ll be honest — I still haven’t perfected pan-frying — but the schnitzels came out delicious, thanks in large part to the texture and consistency of these crumbs. The crumbs were excellent — they stuck perfectly to the turkey, crisped up nicely, and once seasoned, dinner was a total win (and so were the leftovers!).
If you’re looking for a solid gluten-free option next time you make schnitzel, I highly recommend giving Eshbal–Barili Gluten-Free Baked Crumbs a try.
PS: The label is in Hebrew, so look for the bag that says פירורי מאפה.

Weekly Update for the week of  November 30, 2025:

It Started with a Brownie Bite… Then Came the Gluten-Free Quiches

A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Jerusalem Business Conference sponsored by AACI, Nefesh B’Nefesh, and Israel Networking Hub. It was a fantastic event. But that’s not what this post is about.

One of the sponsors was Muffin Boutique, and besides the owner personally helping me with a special request, the food was excellent.

muffin boutique

For me, the standout moment was the gluten-free brownie bites. They were out of this world. At one point, someone I was speaking with took a bite and said, “These are the best chocolate muffins I’ve ever had with or without gluten.” That pretty much says it all.

I was so impressed (and grateful) that I reached out afterward to ask what other gluten-free items they offer. The owner responded with a complete list of gluten-free quiches:
mushroom, sweet potato, broccoli, tomato-basil, cauliflower, pepper-goat cheese, and onion. Please note Gluten free quiches need to be ordered in advance.

We ordered a gluten free mushroom and a gluten free onion quiche to try. When my wife and I visited their location at 13 Daniel Yanovsky, Jerusalem, parking was easy, and the staff were friendly and helpful, pointing out the gluten free fritters, which are baked, not fried. The fritters are made with carrots and zucchini and are dairy. Naturally, we tried a few… and they were very good. They also have gluten-free salads and shakes in the store.

Next week I will be sharing a new recipe, so be sure to check out the post.

For more restaurants with gluten-free friendly options and gluten-free recipes tested and approved by my harshest critic, please visit glutenfreeisrael.com.

Weekly Update for the week of  November 23, 2025: Forget Pasta Thursday — last week was Pastrami Thursday

Two weeks ago, my wife and I were in Efrat when she noticed that Prohibition Pickle (facebook.com/Prohibitionpickleh) had just moved into a new location. Naturally, we stopped in.

Prohibition Pickle

Chaim, the owner, was incredibly helpful. He pointed out which items were gluten-free (with the reminder that the kitchen is cross-contaminated) and which items use soy oil — a huge help for anyone with sensitivities. During our conversation, he mentioned they might eventually host a restaurant-style pop-up. I suggested offering gluten-free bread… and I like to think that maybe — just maybe — that nudge helped inspire what came next.

So when my wife saw a post on Secret Gush Etzion announcing their pop-up — and that it included gluten-free bread — we decided to skip the pasta and go all-in.

Full disclosure: I ate way too much.
Full recommendation: Order the Smokey New Wedge Fries and the potato kugel if they’re on the menu — and definitely leave room for dessert. The crème brûlée is legit.

Important note: They’re not a full restaurant, and they’re not open every night or every week. Pop-ups are occasional, and from what Chaim shared, each menu will be different. Make sure to check their Facebook page and Secret Gush Etzion so you don’t show up expecting dinner and walk away disappointed.

Whether you stop by for a pop-up or pick up herring and cold cuts for Shabbat, you should definitely give them a try.

Weekly Update for the week of  November 16, 2025: Gluten Free Chocolate Crinkle Cookie

Weekly Update for the week of  November 9, 2025: Skip the BBQ — Tap the App

Normally, I’m all for firing up the BBQ and making burgers myself.

The other day, however, I was feeling lazy (and a bit under the weather) while craving a good burger.

Luckily, the Burgers Bar franchise has a location right here on our Yeshuv.

My daughter opened up their app, placed our order, and within a few clicks, dinner was on its way.

Now, is it as good as my homemade version? That’s not the point. What matters is that their burgers are flavorful, and most importantly, they offer gluten free bread; of course, they will warn you that their restaurants are cross-contaminated.

I’m not sure if this is intentional, but the gluten free buns have sesame seeds, while the ones with gluten do not.

You can choose from a large variety of toppings and add-ons. My favorite is the portabella mushroom, all with just a few taps on your phone.

If you’re traveling or looking for a nearby branch, here’s a list of Burger Bar locations in Israel that I pulled off of their website, along with their Kosher certifications

Gluten Free Spaghetti in Kfar Etzion

Last week, my wife and daughter were in Kfar Etzion doing some holiday shopping. While there, my daughter spotted a new sign in front of our favorite spot — Ninos Pizza Bar, home (in our opinion) to the best gluten-free pizza around. The sign said they now serve pasta!

I suggested she stop in and ask if they had a gluten-free option — and sure enough, they did.

The pizza came out first, so we enjoyed it as an appetizer before sharing the pasta dishes.

We ordered two dishes: one with a creamy pesto sauce and the other with a rich red sauce. Both were excellent — and it was a nice change to enjoy gluten-free spaghetti instead of the usual penne or fusilli you often find.

What a treat — gluten-free pizza and spaghetti in the sukkah!

If you find yourself in Kfar Etzion and you’re hungry, definitely check out Ninos Pizza Bar.

Weekly Update for the week of  October 6, 2025: The Perfect Gluten Free Sukkah Meal

With all the cooking that comes with Sukkot, I’m always looking for recipes that are easy to make, quick to clean up, and still feel special enough for the chag. This one checks every box.

It’s an actual one-pan meal — everything cooks together, so there’s minimal mess and no juggling multiple pots and timers. The ground turkey comes together with the sauce in minutes, and the flavors only get better as they blend.
Best of all, it’s easy to carry right out to the Sukkah.

Wishing your family a happy and joyful Sukkoth.

Weekly Update for the week of  September 14 , 2025:  a Gluten Free Dessert

As Rosh Hashanah is less than a week away, I wanted to share a family favorite. Gluten Free Apple Crumble. This is an easy recipe, once you peel and cut the apples. The dessert is best served warm and accompanied by vanilla ice cream on top. Who says every meal over the holiday has to be poultry or beef? After all, a fish head is one of the simian, so why not have salmon for a meal and have a yummy dessert topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream?

Weekly Update for the week of  August 31 , 2025:  A Shelf Stable Gluten Free Pizza Crust

Finding a shelf-stable gluten-free pizza crust that actually tastes good can feel like searching for a unicorn. But I recently tried one that surprised me in the best way. Tami gluten-free crusts are a product designed to sit on your pantry shelf. It delivers a texture and flavor that surpasses several gluten-filled, shelf-stable crusts I’ve tried in the past. It crisps up nicely, holds toppings without falling apart, and has just the right balance between chewy and firm.

What’s even more impressive is how it compares to the gluten-free offerings of some chain restaurants. Honestly, I’d put this crust side-by-side with a few of the better-known pizza chains, and it would hold its own—or even win. Of course, being able to add your own favorite sauce and toppings helps put this crust over the top.

For those of us who don’t always have the time to make dough from scratch or to go to a restaurant, having a reliable, tasty shelf-stable option feels like a small victory in the gluten-free world.

Tami gluten free pizza crust

I am sure that these crusts are sold at many stores around Israel, but if you are in the Gush, please check out צנובר (Tsnobar). Address: 1, Kfar Ezion 02-993-5391. It’s a charming little shop that offers cheeses, nuts, olives,  spices, oils, fresh eggs, honey, and other items. Their ad says it best “A delicatessen from nature.”

The owner and his staff are accommodating and are happy to check ingredients or open new bags for allergy reasons. As a bonus, the crusts were on sale last week when we were there.

Weekly Update for the week of  August 24,  2025:  Baking is a Science

Baking is a science. I consider myself reasonably competent in the kitchen. Am I a professional chef? Not even close. However, when I follow a recipe or cook by taste, most people usually take seconds or thirds, and I don’t think they are trying to be nice.

That being said, it is cooking and grilling. About a month ago, my son told me about these great cookies his friend’s Savta (Grandma in Hebrew) made when he was in Yeshiva, and that even the boys who were not gluten-free were devouring them. So I told him to reach out to his friend and ask him to ask his Grandma for the recipe and for permission to share it.

Well, after trying to make the cookies twice, I need to apologize to Savta Devora. I did not do her recipe justice. I’m not sure if it was because ChatGPT messed up the translation or if it is because I am not meant to bake cookies.

My son said they still tasted good, just not as good as Savta Devora’s. Mine were flat and hers were perfectly rounded on top. My wife, daughter, and I didn’t give the cookies as great a review.

gluten free cookies on a purple tray

Since it is Tuesday and time for the weekly update, I decided to share the recipe and my story. Why? I need to keep it real. We all have wins, and sometimes we come up short. Perhaps, some recipes just need a savtas touch.

I am including the recipe in its original Hebrew along with the translation.

Stay tuned for next week’s update, which I hope will be a winner. If you make these cookies and think they are a winner, please comment below. And to Savta Devora, sorry I don’t have your golden touch in the kitchen.

Grandma’s Gluten-Free Cookies (Lavi’s Grandma)
Ingredients
1 ½ cups oil (1 cup + 200 g)
2 cups white sugar
¾ cup packed brown sugar
3 eggs
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
Optional: ½ teaspoon ground cloves (I did not use)
3 cups “Kama Ke’Regil” flour (gluten-free flour blend)
Just under ½ cup ground almonds
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
½ bag of chocolate chips ( I used a heaping ½ cup)
½ cup raisins
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Mix together oil and sugar.
Add the flour, the rest of the dry ingredients, chocolate chips, and raisins.
Add vanilla extract and mix (I prefer kneading by hand).
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing after each until a uniform, firm dough forms (again, I finish kneading by hand).
Optional: place the dough in the fridge for 5–10 minutes, but it’s not necessary.
Form small balls and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 15–20 minutes.
Remove from the oven when the cookies are lightly golden but not burnt, while still a bit soft. They will firm up as they cool naturally.
Remove from the parchment paper and store in a container. Can also be frozen.
Enjoy!

Weekly Update for the week of  August 10,  2025: A Restaurant with Gluten Free Options

Dolphin Yam

Several months ago, when my Father-in-law was visiting, he took my daughter to Dolphin Yam. This was exciting to me. Why? The restaurant, which has been open for years, is now certified Kosher.
Last week, my wife and I were in Jerusalem for a meeting, so we tried it out.
As the name suggests, it is a seafood restaurant, and they offer beef and lamb dishes as well. The restaurant is not gluten free, but the staff was able to tell us which dishes did not contain gluten.
The food has a Mediterranean flair and mixes flavors in a way that I would never try in my kitchen.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is pleasant, but it is on the more expensive side, with main dishes starting at 86 NIS, with the most expensive dish at 162 NIS. On the dessert menu, they had a gluten free chocolate cake.

If you are looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate a special occasion or have a nice night out, you should try Dolphin Yam.

Weekly Update for the week of  August 3, 2025: A Great Israeli Hot Dog

Now that the 9 days have concluded with Tisha B’av, we can once again get haircuts and start eating meat, as I have mentioned before, I love my BBQ.

Having made Aliyah from the United States, specifically Chicago, which, in my humble opinion, is home to some of the greatest kosher hot dogs. There were the days of Kosher Zion, which closed decades ago, then Best Kosher, before Sara Lee acquired them, and of course, Romanian Kosher, which is still a family favorite.

Israeli hot dogs always seemed to be a few steps behind their American counterparts. Finding a good hot dog in Israel has been a challenge until now. That is, until we found Hendel’s hot dogs. They offer a variety of types, including chicken dogs, as well as deli meat.

The products are available in Yigal Hazan Butchery, Kikar Noi 60, Beit Shemesh. Hendel’s also has a store located at 25 Hamertz St., Rosh HaAyin 48017.

If you’re afraid of missing out on good hot dogs and that is holding you back from making Aliyah, let that not be the reason. Hendel’s hot dogs will satisfy your cravings for classic American-style hot dogs.

Cafe Rimon

Last week, my wife and I had lunch with a couple of friends who live in Bet Shemesh. They suggested Cafe Rimon in the big city. We called ahead to make sure that they had gluten-free options and were told they did. The waitress was very careful to warn that the kitchen is not gluten-free and items may be cross-contaminated.

That being said, they offer gluten-free pasta on the menu and clearly identify which selections are gluten-free. According to Google, Café Rimon has three locations in Israel, all within the Jerusalem area. There are two in Jerusalem and one in Beit Shemesh.

If you are looking for another option with gluten-free items on the menu, check out Cafe Rimon.

Weekly Update for the week of  July 20, 2025: What can I bring you?

What can I bring you?

As family and friends come from the United States to visit, a common question we are all asked is, ‘What can I bring you?

We all have our favorites. Be it your favorite cereal, snack, or household item. This week, I want to make the following suggestion when people ask what they can bring. I suggest you ask for Mission Gluten-Free Soft Taco Tortillas. They don’t take up a lot of space and don’t weigh much.

Tortillas, in general, are an excellent base for many recipes. I like making quesadillas and wraps. Be it a cheese and veggie quesadilla or a tuna wrap. They are a fast and easy substitute for bread.

Mission Gluten-Free Soft Taco Tortillas

Mission Gluten-Free Soft Taco Tortillas are available at many grocery stores in the United States, as well as Walmart and, of course, Amazon

What do you ask your family and friends to bring you when they visit Israel?

Please send me an email so I can share your favorites with the community.

Weekly Update for the week of  July 13, 2025: A Gluten Snack

This week’s update features a gluten-free snack.

Before making Aliyah almost 8 years ago, one of the gluten-free snacks we used to buy was Gratify gluten free Everything Thins. Also known as gluten-free pretzels, made by Osem Nestlé USA.

Last week, while in Efrat at the Shuk Ha’Eer grocery store, my wife found the gluten free pretzels. As with many products in Israel, they are either seasonal or available at certain times and not others or here today and gone tomorrow.

Gratify gluten free Everything Thins are in stock at least at Shuk Ha’Eeer in Efrat, and I assume they are available elsewhere.

Gratify Gluten Free Pretzels

So if you see a bag, buy two or three. The pretzels are a relatively healthy snack that are baked and not fried. The serving size is 15 pretzels. Each serving contains 140 calories, equivalent to 30g. They include 7g of fat, 1g of saturated fat, 0g of trans fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 300mg of sodium, 18g of carbohydrates, 1g of dietary fiber, 2g of total sugars (including 2g of added sugars), and 2g of protein. On top of that, they are great to eat with hummus.

Have the munchies? Try some Gratify gluten free Everything Thins.

Have an idea for a gluten free snack? Please email me and let me know.

Or Delicacy

Or Delicacy is located on the second floor of Kanyon HaAchim. The menus are all in Hebrew, but Google Translate can help with that. Although they do not offer gluten-free bread, they have a nice variety of salads to choose from. They usually have a daily special, which sometimes includes baked salmon. How many coffee shops offer that?

The food is always fresh, and the staff is very helpful in letting you know what ingredients are in the food. Whether you’re looking for a cup of coffee or want to support a small business with a nice selection of gluten free salads as well as other items that don’t contain gluten, you should give this cafe a try.

Air Caffe

Air Caffe is technically not in Tel Aviv but rather in Airport City near Ben Gurion Airport.

The service at the restaurant is excellent. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful, answering all of our questions. My wife had a breakfast that, instead of gluten-free bread, came with a packaged gluten-free roll. The menu says that they offer gluten-free pizza. I asked the waitress what other gluten-free options they offered, and she told me they substitute rice noodles to make gluten-free pasta, and you can get a toast with gluten-free bread.

If you are near the airport and need a restaurant offering gluten-free options, try them out.

Weekly Update for the week of  May 11 2025: a Gluten Free Bakery

This week’s weekly update is about a small business in Efrat

Juliana Cakes is a boutique gourmet cake business located in Efrat. More than delicious cakes, she is an artist with attention to detail. Though her kitchen is not gluten free, when asked, she will accommodate and make some of the most delicious cakes you can imagine.

We first used her for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, and the cake she delivered to the house was more than a cake—it was a centerpiece. Since then, my kids have always requested one of her cakes for birthdays and other special occasions.

Juliana Cakes is a home business with a separate kitchen under the hashgacha of Mehadrin Efrat.

Looking for a cake that is memorable? Reach out to Juliana.

Weekly Update for the week of  May 4, 2025: a Gluten Free Recipe

I hope everyone was safe from last week’s fires and enjoyed an enjoyable Yom Ha’atzmaut barbeque. One of the side dishes I served last week inspired this post as we approach Lag B’Omer for another barbeque.

Weekly Update for the week of  April 27, 2025: a Gluten Free Recipe

In Israel this week, we transition from the solemnity of Yom Hazikaron on Wednesday to the joy of Yom Hatzmaut on Thursday. However, the celebrations are muted again this year because of the ongoing war and the hostages who are still being held captive.

Many of us will be enjoying barbeques with family and friends. So, for this week’s post, I wanted to share an idea for something healthier and link to an older post with a slightly over-the-top side dish.

The idea for a healthier option is smoking chicken breasts or profit (boneless skinless chicken thighs) as the main dish or as an alternative to hotdogs, steaks, or kabobs. Smoked chicken is great alone, in a salad, or in a sandwich on gluten-free bread. 🙂 For the over-the-top is a side dish I posted in the fall, Gluten Free Fancy Fries.

To close this week’s post, I wanted to quote Rabbi Sacks: “A day will one day come when the story of Israel in modern times will speak not just to Jews, but to all who believe in the power of the human spirit as it reaches out to God, as an everlasting symbol of the victory of life over death, hope over despair.”

Weekly Update for the week of  April 20, 2025: a Gluten Free Recipe

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Pesach. I did some experimenting over the holiday, and I will not share all the fails, but substituting almond flour when making pancakes, one cup for one cup of gluten-free flour, does not work.

What did work well was substituting almond flour for the gluten free flour in my pecan-crusted chicken. I will share that updated recipe in the coming weeks.

One of my wins was a Gluten Free Quinoa Sweet Potato Eggplant Salad.
I hope that you enjoy it.

Weekly Update for the week of  April 13,  2025: a Pesach Gluten Free Recipe and an  Update on Some of our Pesach Shopping

Moadim Lisimcha.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Sedar. One of the benefits of living in Israel is only one Sedar :-).

So the holiday started, and even before that, we enjoyed some of the confections we bought for the holiday. First off, a big surprise was the BluPantry cookies. We have had the Sandwich and the Black and Whites. Both were very good, and I would almost say excellent. The Baby Fingers were not as good, but they were still good.

If you are in the Jerusalem area, The Kumkum Tea House, on Beit Lehem Rd 23, Jerusalem, 077-537-3226, is a must-go. She has items with Kitniyote for the Sephardim and items with Matzah meal, so you need to ask, but she has an incredible selection of gluten-free Passover items. I really recommend giving it a try. Most importantly, she is a small business, and supporting small businesses is important.

Now for a recipe…

Weekly Update for the week of  April 6,  2025 Pesach Gluten Free Stock up Ideas

Last week, I wrote about a small business and franchise that produces excellent baked goods for Pesach. Truthfully, I prefer shopping at local businesses. That said, sometimes a large chain offers products you can’t get at other stores.

Yesterday, my wife found many items, some with kitniyot and others without. These items included cookies, crackers, cakes, pasta, gluten-free panko, a coating for chicken or fish, chocolate bars, crackers, oat matzah, and even gluten-free kneidal mix, which we used to bring in from the United States.

How good are all of these items? I’m not sure. But when my wife let the neighbors know she was going to Osher Ad, one of them asked her to pick up some of the cookies and cakes. From experience, I know the crackers in the picture and the chocolate bars are very good. As for the other items, I will share my thoughts in the coming weeks.

Wishing everyone a  Chag Kasher V’sameach

Weekly Update for the week of  March 30,  2025 Feed your Freezer

As we are a week away from Pesach, this week’s update is a suggestion on how to feed the freezer. As a friend recently said, Pesach is the gluten-free holiday. I don’t know if I agree with that, but there are more readily available gluten-free options this time of year.

A great option is the Kumkum Tea House, on Beit Lehem Rd 23, Jerusalem, 077-537-3226. Last year, we ordered Crème Brûlée and a chocolate dessert. Both were big hits. One of the nice things about this business is that it is an independent small business. Her products freeze very well, and we have enjoyed the Crème Brûlée months after Pesach.

The English Cake franchise also offers a nice selection of gluten-free products for Pesach. For the last several years, we have gone to the location in Gush-Etzion Junction, Alon Shvut, Israel englishcake.co.il 02-650-7066, and stocked up on some of their offerings. They have excellent quiches and baked goods.

I highly recommend both of these businesses if you are looking for high-quality gluten-free products to stock your freezer with.

Judith’s Gluten Free Bakery

Has recently moved to her new location right outside the Mahaneh Yehudah Market on Agripas Street. (diagonally across from the Gindi store, close to the traffic circle).

My absolute favorite thing that she makes are the churros. For those that aren’t familiar, churros are  a type of fried dough that is piped into hot oil with a piping bag.

I myself am not gluten free, but my family, so I do not get excited about bread). I feel comfortable saying that these are some of the best churros I have ever had gluten free or with gluten.

She also offers Challah, which has gluten-free wheat, so you can say Hamotzi on Shabbat on it.

The bakery also offers gluten-free bagels, cookies, bourekas that do not taste gluten-free, mini pizzas, incredible croutons, and cinnamon rolls.

The staff is friendly and courteous.

Yael’s Soups is more than just a soup delivery service. Based in the Gush Etzion region, they deliver a diverse selection of soups, including fresh and frozen varieties, along with spreads,  fresh salads and spelt sourdough bread.  (please note the spelt bread is not  certified gluten free but some people who are gluten intolerant and are not celiac are able to eat it), every Tuesday throughout the greater Jerusalem area.

In addition to their regular menu, they provide thoughtful gift packages with soup tailored for get-well wishes, birthdays, condolences, and holidays. While not all soups are gluten-free, they are happy to advise on which options are suitable.

We have a tradition in our family to have pasta on Thursdays and Yael’s Soups on Tuesdays. Recently, I had her Autumn Harvest, and I think it might be my new favorite. As her soups are made fresh, not all soups are always available.

Is a smokehouse in Ra’anana.  My wife and I were in Ra’anana the other day and I had heard about the restaurant but did not know if they offered gluten  free options, so we called to ask and the staff was very accommodating and said that they did.

When we arrived we were told all the smoked meats and salads were gluten-free but the kitchen was not.  As I looked at the menu I noticed under the desserts that they offered a Gluten Free Crème Brule.

The meal was delicious and for research purposes, I ordered the Crème Brule which was also delicious.

The staff was courteous and helpful. The service was excellent, even with the lunch business crowd being served.

We do not get to Ra’anana often but if we did it would be on our list of places to go.

Mojos is a meat restaurant located in the center of Jerusalem. It is not a gluten-free restaurant, but they offer gluten-free items. Before I talk about the food, I have to say that their staff is very friendly and super helpful, as they were happy to answer all the questions we had and gave great recommendations.

They offer gluten-free pizzas, and the crust is very good. What makes these pizzas unique is that you can get a kosher pepperoni pizza with cashew cheese. My wife had the BBQ pizza, and I liked it too.

The restaurant is handicapped accessible, and they offer vegan options too, not that we tried those.

I will undoubtedly return to this location in the future.

Ela Cafe

Was recommended to me by a mom on our Yeshuv. Her child has Celiac Disease and unlike my children who are only gluten intolerant she has to be very careful and does not go to many restaurants.

The mom told me that Ela Cafe located at the entrance of Kibbutz Beit Govrin.  A quote taken from their website by Adi one of the owners:

I have celiac disease, and that’s why I rarely eat out,” “This difficulty is familiar to me, and that’s why I created an entire gluten-free menu.

If  you are ever near the Kibbutz be sure to try it out.

פפיטוס – Pepito’s

פפיטוס – Pepito’s is a Mexican Restaurant located in Mahaneh Yehudah. I have been to the restaurant before. Recently my nephew who has Celiac Disease was in town volunteering.

He visited פפיטוס – Pepito’s several times while he was here. Here is what he said about the restaurant, “Pepitos has amazing arepas, with a cornflour pita-like shell and delicious asado with guac, beans and salsa verde. The texture is unlike anything you’ve ever had, and I guarantee you’ll want to come back”

Next time I am near the Shuk I will need to visit it again.

Domino’s Pizza & Golda’s

Last week we went to a parent-son learning at my son’s Yeshiva up north.

On our way back home, we stopped in Afula at Domino’s Pizza for dinner and Golda’s Ice for dessert. As an Oleh, you would always see Domino’s commercials on TV. Can’t say for certain how good it is in the US but in Israel it is Yummy.

There are not as many Domino’s Pizza chains in Israel as many of the other chains. While eating the pizza my wife and son thought the gluten-free pizza was really good so I tasted it and had to agree.

This was actually my wife’s second time at that location. The first time she was there was with my daughter when they dropped my son off at Yeshiva. My daughter had commented when she got home how good it was.

I do not think any gluten-free pizza is as good as Ninos Pizza Bar in the Gush, but that being said, the pizza was fresh, had fresh toppings, and hit the spot.

I don’t know if all of the chains are Kosher certified but the one in Afula is and if you are up north and are hungry I recommend stopping in.

My favorite food group is ice cream, so when we were at Domino’s, we had to stop for ice cream at Golda’s in the same mall. If you ask the staff at Golda’s, they tell you which flavors are gluten-free, but they warn you that they might be cross-contaminated.

The mall in Afula has 2 great spots with gluten-free options. The mall is located at
Yitshak Rabin Boulevard 20, Afula.

Weekly Update for the week of June 30, 2024 – a Gluten Free Restaurant

Babado

My nephew who has Celiac disease came to Israel for a visit. My wife and I heard about the restaurant and told him about it. We suggested that he try it. He has been there twice in the last week.

Babado is located on Beit Lechem in a store front. My wife had a shawarma plate which I tried and I had the corned beef. Both meats were delicious. Each meal came with a generous amount of freshly made Israeli salads. The owner was friendly and the staff was polite. I asked for seconds on the marinated eggplant and the staff graciously gave me a second helping. The eggplant was marinated with lemon and was really good.

Though the restaurant is not gluten free they were more than accommodating to my wife and my nephew. The was happy to show that he used olive oil as we have soy oil intolerances.

If I lived across the street from Babado I would definitely be a frequent visitor.

Ichikidana Indian cuisine a Gluten Free Restaurant

Ichikidana is a  restaurant that offers Indian cuisine. The restaurant is not gluten free but the staff knows which items do not have gluten. My family went there for dinner last night and the owner explained what was in each of the dishes and which were gluten free.

One of the items that we ordered was a vegetable tempura appetizer. The tempura was made with rice flour and was delicious.  My daughter ordered the lentil dish which comes with a tortilla-type bread that is not gluten free but the owner substituted a gluten free rice option for no additional charge.

The restaurant is conveniently located in the Jerusalem near Kikar Hamusica .

Casa Lavi a Gluten Free Restaurant

Located in the heart of Jerusalem is a coffee and sandwich shop.

My wife and daughter recently visited the restaurant for breakfast.

Not only did the server explain to them the difference between the different kinds of coffee there were a variety of options on the menu they could choose from that offered gluten-free bread.  They each had avocado toast with eggs prepared differently.

The restaurant also offered gluten-free desserts.
