Gluten Free Shopping in Israel

Gluten Free Israel

Gluten Free Grocery Shopping in Israel

Shopping for gluten free products in Israel blends traditional Middle Eastern flavors with contemporary dietary trends. One of the highlights of gluten free shopping in Israel is the abundance of fresh produce available year-round.

Farmers’ markets such as Shuk HaCarmel in Tel Aviv and Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem offer a large variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, providing gluten-free shoppers with many options to create wholesome meals.

In general Israeli supermarkets offer an extensive selections of products made from gluten-free ingredients. Shoppers can find gluten-free pasta made from rice or corn flour, quinoa-based snacks, and chickpea flour for baking. Brands like Osem part of the Nestle family of companies and B&D offer certified gluten-free products, ensuring peace of mind for those with dietary restrictions.

Gluten Free Sections in the Grocery Store

Most stores from the local makolet to the grocery store have a gluten free section. Two of the larger chains Rami Levi and Super Sol offer a large variety of gluten free products both in their stores and online.

From my shopping experience, I find that the Super Sol on Agron in Jerusalem has a nice selection of gluten free products as well as fresh gluten free bread if you get there early in the day.

The chain Nizat Ha Duvdevan offers healthier options in general and has many organic options too. The stores have frozen gluten free begets and breads. My daughter likes making sandwiches with the begets. Additionally they have large selection of gluten free flours which make cooking at home much easier.

The stores are individual franchises. We frequent the locations in Beitart Ilit and Efrat both of which have a nice selection and are always helpful.

Gluten Free Shopping Made Easy

In my humble opinion, Glueless is the ultimate gluten fee shopping experience. The store is not big but everything is gluten free. They bake their own breads with gluten free flour. For Chanukah they make sufganiyote and for Pesach they bake matzah.

What I like about the store is that they bring in products from around the world. The variety as well as the

quality is excellent. On one trip to the store, my daughter and I finished off a bag of some sort of chip mix on the way home. I never missed the gluten.

Their branches are at Mahane Yehuda, 31 Mahane Yehoda Street 026433305 and Oranim gas station, Jerusalem, Israel.

They are supposed to be moving to a new location soon and I will update the site once that happens.

Though I have never been there there is a store called Guluten in the Even Yehuda area. From looking at their webite it seems it is a gluten free store in the central Sharon region of Israel east of Netanya.

One of our favorite fruit stores is in the Gush. M439+2HH מרכז מסחרי, Kfar Ezion.   It is called Sdot Ha Aretz. The store is clean and has a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The customer service is exceptional and the owner will even pick your melon so you have the sweetest fruit each and every time.

Gluten Free Staples in Our Home

In Israel there is a rich tradition of Salatim. Salatim is a term used to refer to a variety of small salads or appetizers typically served as appetizer spread or part of the Israeli breakfast. The history of salatim in Israel is intertwined with the broader culinary traditions of the region, influenced by Jewish, Arab, and Mediterranean cuisines.

There are many brands of salatim in Israel. These spreads or dips include humus, tahni, cabbage salads, eggplant salads, and tomato based salads often with peppers. Many Israeli homes prepare their own salads but I prefer the simplicity of opening a fresh tub of humus or any other spread and plating it nicely. In our house our favorite brand is Achla.

Israeli pickles are another staple in our home. My favorite brand is Kvuzat Yaven. I personally prefer the pickled cucumbers in vinegar while my kids prefer spicy cucumbers in brine. Either way mix them together have them on a gluten free cracker it is a great snack.

Schnitzel is a popular dish in Israel. Grocery stores have many varieties of schnitzel. From chicken to turkey, but the one we all like in our house is called schnitzel teras or corn schnitzel. Not only is it gluten free it is vegan too. They taste best when baked in an oven but when I am hungry, I put a couple in the the microwave for about 60 seconds and I have a gluten free meal. When they are cooked in the over they are addictively good.

We have a tradition in our house of pasta Thursday. Whether you go to the local makolet or the grocery store there are plenty of gluten free rice kinds of pasta and potato gnocchi options to choose from. I particularly like the Tinkyada brand which is made from brown rice. It is great alone with tomato sauce or cottage cheese or in a baked pasta dish.

B&D makes excellent corn flake crumbs. They are perfect for making schnitzel at home or for coating fish when making fish and chips.

Though they are not my favorite the rest of my house like soup nuts. I personally do not like them with or without gluten. There are several brands available that always are a hit.

These are just some of the items in our home. When we have guests if we do not tell them they are eating a gluten free pasta dish or schnitzel they would never know.

Additionally so many Israeli brand offer gluten free options it is relatively simple to stock the cupboards with staples everyone will enjoy.

Gluten Free Shopping  for Snacks

I am a kid at heart. I like potato chip, cookies, chocolate and junk food in general.  There are many gluten free option in the grocery store that the whole family can enjoy.

When I was a kid I used to love Bugles Corn Chips. Now as an adult living in Israel the whole family can enjoy Apropo the Israeli gluten free version of a Bugle made by Osem.

Potato chips are a weakness of mine.  Pringles (TM) use to have a commercial once you pop you can’t stop. That is how I feel when I open a bag of Tapuschips. Once I open a fresh bag of chips especially the wavy or ridged variety I can’t stop. I don’t miss my favorite American brands while chowing down on these chips.

I love chocolate. I despise cheap chocolate as for almost two decades I owned a candy store. Elite chocolate bars are good. I especially the crisp bar. I once bought it by accident before my Hebrew was passable and really enjoyed it.

My last favorite when I go shopping is not for me but for my dogs. Yes my dogs love Bamba. It is the most cost effective doggy treat on the market. Sorry Osem I hope that does not offend you.

Gluten free shopping in Israel is relatively simple. There are always large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables available, but unlike in the United States many are seasonal. Even if you are in a story that does not have a gluten free section all you have to do is look for labels that say the Hebrew words ללא גלוטן .

Happy shopping!
