Gluten free baking in Israel is more than just a dietary trend; it’s a reflection of the country’s rich tapestry of cultures and its commitment to inclusivity. With a diverse population comprising Jews, Muslims, Christians, and others, Israeli cuisine has always been a melting pot of flavors and influences. From the Mediterranean shores to the bustling markets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the culinary landscape is as varied as the people who call this land home.
At the heart of Israeli gluten-free baking lies the reverence for traditional recipes passed down through generations. From savory challah to delicate pastries, bread is deeply ingrained in Jewish culture, symbolizing unity and abundance. However, with an increasing awareness of gluten intolerance and Celiac disease, there’s a growing demand for alternatives that cater to dietary restrictions without compromising on taste or texture.
Classic recipes have been recreated to fit a gluten-free lifestyle, drawing inspiration from ancient grains like teff and buckwheat as well as contemporary alternatives like almond flour, coconut flour, cargill and molino flour. Baked goods are now available gluten free. They are not only delicious but also nourishing and accessible to all.
Gluten Free Bakeries in Israel showcase an eclectic mix of gluten-free delights, from fluffy bourekas filled with spinach and feta to decadent chocolate babkas oozing with gooey goodness. Bakers experiment with locally sourced ingredients and global flavors to create unique treats that cater to every palate. Gluten free baked goods are available for daily consumption and for all of the holidays, sufganiyot for Chanukah, hamentashen or oznei Haman for Purim and even Matzah for Pesach.
We live outside of Jerusalem in the Judean Hills. As such many of my recommendations are primarily based in those locations or those easily drivable but in addition to my favorite bakeries I will also include other gluten free bakeries. Some have been that have been recommended to me by family and friends.
Amit Barkat Patisserie עמית ברקת פטיסרי
Located in the Talpiot industrial district the bakery offers a large variety of delectable gluten free treats.
We have enjoyed macaroons torts and sufganiyote to name a few.

Ble Kemach Bakery in Tel Aviv
Ble Kemach Bakery opened its doors in March 2019 as a true family business. From day one, their philosophy has been simple: anyone who works with them becomes part of the family. The bakery operates as a free-spirited patisserie and boulangerie — a creative space where culinary dreams are turned into reality.
The heart behind Bleikmach goes back even further. In 2007, celiac disease was diagnosed in their nephew, Sagie. What was once an abundance of baked goods suddenly became a world of limitations. That moment highlighted a real gap: a lack of high-quality baked goods for people avoiding flours made from the five traditional grains. Out of that need, and a deep love of baking, Bleikmach set out to raise the bar for gluten-free pastries — without compromising on joy, creativity, or flavor.
I had the opportunity to taste one of their gluten-free lemon meringue pies, and if I lived in the Tel Aviv area, I would absolutely be a regular there.

Cafe Romi
A few weeks ago, I shared how much I enjoyed a cake from Ble Kemech. When I reached out to ask where else their products are sold, they pointed me to Cafe Romi in Modiin.
Modiin isn’t exactly next door for us, but it’s far closer than Tel Aviv—so off we went.
Cafe Romi offers a mix of gluten-free and regular items, all clearly marked (though it’s always smart to double-check). The owner, Gali, was incredibly helpful. Right at the entrance, there’s an impressive display of gluten-free breads, including gluten-free pita.
My nephew, who has celiac disease, gave enthusiastic approval—two thumbs up—for the gluten-free hamotzi challah rolls, pita bread, and the cakes we bought for Shabbat.
Some items are baked on-site, and we arrived just as fresh gluten-free cookies and bourekas came out of the oven. Other products are brought in from additional locations, and there’s also a nice selection of packaged gluten-free items available for purchase.
If you’re anywhere near Modiin, Cafe Romi is absolutely worth a stop. There’s plenty of free parking, a welcoming and knowledgeable staff, and even a Cafe Romi WhatsApp group ( QR code included).
One more bonus: I asked, and yes—they’re planning to have gluten-free hamantaschen for Purim.

Judith’s Gluten Free Bakery
Has recently moved to her new location right outside the Mahaneh Yehudah Market on Agripas Street. (diagonally across from the Gindi store, close to the traffic circle).
My absolute favorite thing that she makes are the churros. For those that aren’t familiar, churros are a type of fried dough that is piped into hot oil with a piping bag.
I myself am not gluten free, but my family, so I do not get excited about bread). I feel comfortable saying that these are some of the best churros I have ever had gluten free or with gluten.
She also offers Challah, which has gluten-free wheat, so you can say Hamotzi on Shabbat on it.
The bakery also offers gluten-free bagels, cookies, bourekas that do not taste gluten-free, mini pizzas, incredible croutons, and cinnamon rolls.
The staff is friendly and courteous.

Juliana Cakes is a boutique gourmet cake business located in Efrat. More than delicious cakes, she is an artist with attention to detail. Though her kitchen is not gluten free, when asked, she will accommodate and make some of the most delicious cakes you can imagine.
We first used her for my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, and the cake she delivered to the house was more than a cake—it was a centerpiece. Since then, my kids have always requested one of her cakes for birthdays and other special occasions.
Juliana Cakes is a home business with a separate kitchen under the hashgacha of Mehadrin Efrat.

I discovered them when I had a gluten free brownie bite at a conference. Someone next to me even said, “These are the best chocolate muffins I’ve ever had, with or without gluten,” and honestly… I agree.
Curious to explore more, I reached out to ask what additional gluten free items were available. They offer an entire lineup of gluten-free quiches, including mushroom, sweet potato, broccoli, tomato-basil, cauliflower, pepper-goat cheese, and onion. (Important note: gluten-free quiches must be ordered in advance.)
During our visit, the staff also pointed out their gluten-free fritters — baked, not fried — made with carrots and zucchini and fully dairy. Naturally, we tasted a few, and they were very good. The shop also offers gluten-free salads, shakes.
The restaurant is handicapped accessible, and they plenty of parking
Between the friendly service and creative menu options, Muffin Boutique is absolutely a place I’ll return to again.

English Cake is a franchise but we have only gone to the one in the Gush.
Please note this recommendation is only for Passover.
About a week before Pesach the bakery becomes Kosher for Pesach. While they are kosher for Pesach they have an excellent gluten free pizza, quiches as well as baked goods.
I highly recommend that if you are looking for a quality gluten free products to pack the freezer with this is is the place to go.

Beyond the walls of professional kitchens, Israeli home cooks are also enthusiastically adopting gluten-free baking. Equipped with recipes and internet tools they’re exploring new and novel methods and tastes that challenge the perception of gluten-free baking. Gluten-free delicacies have become a mainstay on tables across the country. In our home we make banana bread, brownies and cookies substituting the flour for a gluten free variety be it molino or almond flour.
So come, break bread with us, and taste the flavors of Israel’s past, present, and future—all without the gluten.
